Chief Executive Gerhard Aigner and the president of the
Portuguese Football Federation, Gilberto Parca Madail,
attended the ceremony at the Centro Cultural de Belém
in the Portuguese capital.
The mayors of nine cities in Portugal that will be
hosting UEFA EURO 2004 matches were also present at the
ceremony to launch the logo for the final round in two
years' time.
The UEFA EURO 2004 logo has been designed by the
London-based EURO RSCG Wnek Gosper company, which is
part of the EURO RSCG global network. The logo aims to
capture the festive and sporting spirit of European
football's most prestigious event.

"The
publication of the logo, and its further use, provides the
event with visual identity," said Mr Aigner at the
ceremony. "From now on, the Portuguese people and the
public at large will be able to identify what will be an
outstanding event."
"The logo is the symbol of an organisation where more
than 3,000 people, from Portugal and elsewhere, will work
towards the same objective of creating a platform for the best
sporting conditions," he added. "They will also work
towards showing the world that Portugal is an outstanding host
country. The logo stands for a commitment to achieving
excellence."
"This is a milestone in Portugal's organisation of EURO
2004," said Mr Parca Madail. "We are working jointly
with UEFA, and we hope that this will be the best EURO
ever."
"We wish to assure UEFA that Portugal will be worthy of
the responsibility that you gave us in 1999," said
Portugal's Assistant to the Prime Minister, Mr Jose Luis
Arnaut. "It is clear that UEFA and the Portuguese
government have common points of view and goals about EURO
2004."
Former Portugal star Eusébio and current Portuguese
national-team members Ricardo, Abel Xavier, Rui Jorge and Joăo
Pinto were also present at the ceremony, together with
Portugal coach Antonio Oliveira.
In order to provide the people of Portugal with their own
sense of ownership of the event and the logo, and at the same
time appeal to both a football and broader lifestyle audience,
an exhaustive gathering of Portuguese cultural references was
made in the design process.
The UEFA EURO 2004 logo's design communicates 'football
passion' with a simple association of the two basic graphic
elements - the heart and the football. It will be applied to
all promotional activities from signage to digital
applications. - UEFA.com
